The one person you cannot afford to abandon
Have you noticed how easy it is to be kind, patient, and understanding towards everyone else, but how quickly you can turn against yourself?
- You forgive other people.
- You make excuses for their behaviour.
- You see their struggles and understand their pain.
But when it comes to you, the inner critic appears.
I should have done better.
I am not enough.
I should be further ahead by now.
Why can’t I just get it together?
We are our own worst frenemy, friend and enemy in one.
We give ourselves around sixty thousand negative thoughts a day.
Imagine if your best friend spoke to you the way you speak to yourself.
Would that friendship last?
Many people spend years searching for love, approval and validation from the outside world, while quietly abandoning the one person who has been there through every single moment of their life.
Themselves.
Imagine a friend who never left, who was with you twenty-four hours a day.
Who saw every mistake, every fear, every insecurity, every moment you felt lost.
Now imagine that friend constantly criticized you and reminded you of everything you had done wrong.
You would not stay friends with that person for long.
Your relationship with yourself underpins everything else.
The way you love.
The way you receive.
The way you set boundaries.
The way you care for your body.
The way you step into your purpose.
So many of us learned to believe we are valuable because we are useful, that we matter because we help others, that we are loved because we give.
Giving from love is beautiful.
But there is a difference between giving from love and giving because a part of you is afraid you are not enough without it.
When your worth depends on what you do for others, your body eventually starts asking, when is it my turn.
That is where exhaustion and resentment begin.
That is where we lose connection with ourselves.
Your body is not just a machine carrying you around.
It is your closest relationship.
Every thought, every emotion, every belief you hold about yourself creates a response within you.
When you constantly push yourself, ignore your needs and override your own signals, your body learns that it is not safe to slow down, that it is not important, that its needs come last.
The next time you feel an uncomfortable emotion, place your hand on your heart and say it out loud.
- I love myself for feeling this.
- I love myself for feeling scared.
- I love myself for feeling lonely.
- I love myself for feeling angry.
- I love myself for feeling exhausted.
You are not approving of the emotion.
You are letting yourself know, I am still here with you.
Be as honest and authentic as you can when you say it, that is what brings you back into the flow of good things.
The trillions of cells that make up you are constantly listening to what you tell yourself, and they respond to your acceptance with good intentions and good chemistry in the body.
A true friend does not only show up when things go wrong.
A true friend celebrates your wins too.
- Do you celebrate yourself?
- Do you acknowledge how far you have come?
- Do you let yourself receive a compliment?
- Do you rest before your body forces you to?
Being your own all weather friend looks like this.
Listening when your body asks for support.
Nourishing yourself with beautiful food, cooked with care and eaten slowly.
Warming yourself properly when you feel cold, a bath, a hot soup, a hot drink, rather than pushing through.
Resting without guilt, including the odd powernap when you are exhausted.
Protecting your energy and saying no when something does not feel right.
Celebrating your achievements, however small.
Allowing yourself to receive.
If you let yourself go without care for too long, the cells that make up the current you stop trusting that you have your own best interests at heart.
Then when it matters most, on the holiday you wanted to enjoy, the wedding you wanted to feel radiant at, the goal you were working toward, your body can let you down at the worst possible moment.
Not out of spite, but because it was never shown it could rely on you.
The Universe is the Bank of Benevolence.
For every act of kindness you show yourself, it adds to it with compounding interest.
When you treat yourself with the love and respect you would offer your best friend, your confidence grows and you begin to glow with an inner radiance that is genuinely irresistible.
You feel less triggered, less anxious, less frustrated.
You stop avoiding intimacy.
You become able to simply accept a compliment.
Stop neglecting your most important ally.
You.

This is the Loving Kindness meditation I use often.
Say it slowly, for yourself first, then for someone else, then for all of us.
- May I be safe.
- May I be happy.
- May I be healthy.
- May I live with ease.
- May you be safe.
- May you be happy.
- May you be healthy.
- May you live with ease.
- May we be safe.
- May we be happy.
- May we be healthy.
- May we live with ease.
Do it daily and watch your life shift.
Source the Force, rather than forcing the Source.
