Your Intuition doesn’t always make sense, until it saves your life!

Have you ever ignored your intuition and paid the price afterwards?

I almost did 25 years ago.

I will never forget the time the tree nearly got us.

It was the summer holidays — hot, sticky, and loud with six kids in the back of the car, their bodies and voices full of school holiday freedom.

We’d just arrived at the Port Sorell caravan park, with our tent, cooking gear, and an overstuffed trailer in tow.

The kind caretaker greeted us warmly and waved us toward a spot he had saved especially for the Robertson tribe.

“A shady one under the big tree,” he said proudly, pointing toward the centre of the campground.

Pete and the kids were thrilled.

“Perfect!” said Pete, stretching his back as he eyed the tree.

The kids leapt out before the car had even stopped.

They were already picking sleeping spots in their heads.

But the second I opened the door and stepped out … something hit me.

A deep, uneasy knowing.

Not fear exactly, but a NO that echoed through my bones.

The spot under the big tree — the one so thoughtfully saved for us — felt wrong.

I didn’t want to cause trouble.

I didn’t want to be difficult.

I mean, the camping ground was packed, the guy had saved this space for us, and my whole family was excited.

But the feeling grew louder the closer I walked to the tree.

Finally, I couldn’t stay silent.

“Pete… I don’t like this spot,” I said quietly, trying to sound casual.

He turned toward me, already halfway through unpacking the trailer.

“What do you mean? It’s perfect — it’s shaded, flat, close to the loos.”

“I know… but I’ve got a bad feeling. I don’t want to camp here.”

The kids overheard and groaned in unison.

“Muuuum, not again!”

Pete raised an eyebrow. “Are you serious? What’s wrong with it?”

I didn’t have an answer that made sense.

I only had a feeling.

“I just… I don’t know. Something’s off. Please, can we ask for another spot?”

Pete sighed, clearly frustrated, but he knows me well enough to recognise when I know something, even if I can’t explain it.

I turned to the caretaker. “I’m really sorry… but do you have another space?”

He hesitated. “Well… we’re pretty full. But there’s a spot right on the edge, near the fence line. It’s not as shaded, but…”

“We’ll take it,” I said.

So we packed up what we’d just unpacked, much to everyone’s dismay, and made our way to the edge of the campground.

It was quieter there, away from the hub.

I still couldn’t explain the unease, but as we set up the tent again, I finally felt my breath settle.

That night, the weather changed.

A wild summer storm rolled in — sudden and cold, with strong winds and eerie energy.

We bundled the kids tighter in their sleeping bags and held the tent down through the howling gusts.

The next morning, Pete got up early.

I was lighting the stove to make coffee when he came back, wide-eyed.

“You need to come and see this,” he said.

I followed him obediently … and to my horror, the tree that had looked so safe the night before had dropped an enormous branch, right on the exact spot where the Robertsons would have slept unsuspectingly in their hapless tent, which would have stood no chance against the weight of it.

I stood there in silence, staring at the crushed earth.

A branch big enough to destroy lives had landed precisely where we were meant to be.

Pete looked at me and quietly said, “Okay. Point taken.”

Ever since that day, he’s taken my hunches a lot more seriously!
