The Hidden Home of Self-Love (It’s Not Where You Think)

By Grada Robertson

March 27, 2026

Have you ever been so stressed and overwhelmed that your stomach felt completely knotted?

That tight, uncomfortable feeling right in your solar plexus …

For some people, it is so tight that they can’t even remember the last time it felt soft, relaxed, and open.

What most people don’t realize is that the solar plexus is the storage container for self-love.

Many people believe self-love lives in the heart.

That is partly true.

The heart contains universal love — the love that connects us to all life.

But the solar plexus is where self-love lives.

And here is the problem.

The more stress, pressure, trauma and overwhelm we carry, the tighter the solar plexus becomes.

Eventually it becomes so contracted that there is simply no room left for self-love.

And yet…

Self-love lies at the heart of all transformation.

If you want to heal trauma…

If you want your circumstances to change…

If you want more joy, abundance and connection in your life…

You must increase your capacity to love and honour yourself.

And this is exactly where I see so many people struggle.

After working with thousands of clients over the past 25+ years, I notice a common theme.

Self-love is often the last thing on their list.

Many people believe they will finally deserve love later.

After they lose weight.

After they achieve something impressive.

After they fix all their wounds.

But here is the truth:

  • You are worthy of love right now, exactly as you are.
  • Yet for many people, embracing that truth feels uncomfortable… even forbidden.

I understand this deeply.

I grew up in a very strict Christian environment where self-love was almost seen as sinful.

The formula for JOY was taught like this:

  • Jesus first.
  • Others second.
  • Yourself last.

For the first forty years of my life, I followed that formula faithfully.

And in many ways it worked for a long time.

I loved raising my six children.

I had a large circle of friends.

I was constantly giving my energy to others.

Putting myself last felt normal.

It worked…

Until it stopped working.

Eventually the Universe began sending messages that something was very out of alignment.

At first they were subtle.

Then they became louder.

Over a period of two years our family had a series of car accidents.

Lisanne wrote off a car.

Caleb totalled three cars.

Peter’s mother crashed her car.

Then one day someone came into my lane and we had a head-on collision.

And finally…

The message became impossible to ignore.

At the age of 43 I was hit by a passing truck while walking as a pedestrian.

The injuries were catastrophic.

Broken bones, internal trauma, spinal damage.

I spent the first ten weeks lying completely still on my back.

For the first time in my life…

I couldn’t run away from myself.

I had to sit with my life.

My beliefs.

My values.

And I realised something profound.

My old formula for happiness had been completely upside down.

Self-love is not selfish.

It is foundational.

Without it, everything eventually collapses.

If someone had helped me understand this earlier, it would have saved me years of pain and suffering.

Which is exactly why I now teach this work.

Over the years I have seen several patterns appear again and again in my clients.

Here are some of the most common ones.

  • Fear of Being Selfish: Many people were taught that loving themselves is selfish.

But if your cup is empty, there is nothing left to give.

Try this affirmation: “Loving myself allows me to love others more deeply.”

  • Perfectionism is one of the greatest blocks to self-love.

We believe we must be flawless to deserve love.

But your imperfections are part of what makes you beautifully human.

Try this: “I am worthy of love exactly as I am.”

  • Negative Self-Talk is another big self love stopper.

That inner critic can be relentless.

But the voice inside your head can become your ally instead of your enemy.

Every time you catch yourself in self-criticism, pause and say: “I am doing my best, and that is enough.”

Unresolved Trauma can leave deep scars that make people feel unworthy of love.

Trauma energy is NOT your energy and it takes up space in your body where self love belongs.

This is where Pete, Caleb and I come in.

We can clear trauma energy from your body in quick time by using the Miracle Method (a formula I developed and teach to students)

  • Healing takes time.

But self-compassion is one of the most powerful medicines.

Try saying: “I return to myself. I am healing. I am lovable at every stage of my journey.”

  • Seeking External Validation

When we rely on others to tell us we are worthy, we give away our power.

  • True self-love grows from within.

Repeat: “I am already enough.”

  • Self-love is not a one-time breakthrough.

It is a daily practice.

Here are a few tools you can begin using immediately.

Daily Affirmation

Every morning and every evening repeat: “I love myself unconditionally.”

At first it might feel strange.

But the more you say it, the more your nervous system begins to believe it.

Solar Plexus Meditation

Sit quietly and close your eyes.

Place your hands over your heart and solar plexus.

Take a slow breath.

Imagine a warm golden light filling your heart and solar plexus.

With every inhale say silently: “I love myself.”

With every exhale allow that love to expand through your body.

Self-love is not only something we think.

It is something we practice.

Take a walk in nature.

Rest when your body asks for it.

Speak kindly to yourself.

Set boundaries when needed.

And one of the most powerful practices of all…

  • Stay in your lane.
  • Stop trying to rescue everyone.
  • Protect your energy.
  • Honour your own life.
  • Self-love is not a destination.
  • It is a path.
  • A daily choice.

The more you practice it, the more relaxed you feel inside your body.

Your solar plexus softens.

Your life begins to shift.

Opportunities open.

Relationships improve.

And something beautiful begins to happen…

You start living your life from inner alignment instead of exhaustion.

If this message resonates with you, it may be time to go deeper.

For many people, reading about self-love is helpful.

But real transformation happens when we work together and clear the deeper blocks stored in the nervous system and energy field.

This is exactly what Peter, Caleb and I do when we have a session with you.

We support you to:

  • Release deep trauma patterns
  • Rebuild self-trust and inner safety
  • Restore self-love at the level of the body and nervous system
  • Create a life that feels aligned, abundant and peaceful

This work has transformed thousands of lives over the past 25 years.

And it would be an honour to walk that path with you too.

The most powerful moment in your life is the moment you finally say:

YES to yourself.
