Friends for Life!

By Grada Robertson

Have you ever felt stuck in your life?

You are trying so hard, and things are not moving fast enough?

Did you know that investing time and energy into becoming your own best friend is the solution you are looking for?

Perhaps you have never even considered that you can be the ONE friend to yourself who will never let you down!

We often focus on our relationships with others but rarely pay attention to how we treat ourselves.

We are our own worst FRENIMY (friend & enemy)!

Did you know that we give ourselves around 60,000 negative thoughts every day?

It’s like carrying around a chorus of critical voices constantly judging us.

Imagine if your best friend talked to you the way you talk to yourself.

Would that friendship last?

Probably not!

This negative self-talk can be incredibly damaging.

It undermines your confidence and keeps you stuck in a cycle of self-doubt and negativity blocking the flow of prosperity.

So, how can you change this?

Start by becoming aware of your inner dialogue.

When you catch yourself being critical, pause and ask: “Would I say this to my best friend?”

Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations.

For example, if you think, “I’m not good enough,” change it to, “I am capable and deserving of success.”

The most effective mantra in my manual for life is: “I love myself for feeling (negative emotion)

“I Love myself for feeling lonely”

I love myself for feeling angry… frustrated…. Scared… silly…. Cold…. Exhausted….”

You get it.

Simply notice what you are feeling in the moment, be brutally honest, put your hand on your heart and say the above mantra out loud.

The 50 trillion cells in your body that are constantly eavesdropping on what you tell yourself, begin to feel your acceptance and good intentions, which will release feel good chemicals in your body.

You don’t need to fight or resist bad feelings, and pretend you are feeling positive when you are not, when you say my mantra.

Always be as authentic as possible, that gets you back into the flow of good things in life.

My second point is that most of us have “rainy day friends” – those who show up when things go wrong but disappear when things go right.

It’s great to have support during tough times, but it’s equally important to have friends who celebrate your wins.

Think about a time you achieved something significant and wanted to share your happiness, but no one was there to celebrate with you.

It can feel lonely and disheartening.

Now, let’s turn this around.

Are you that kind of friend to yourself?

Do you celebrate your own achievements, no matter how small?

Being your own best friend means being there for yourself in both good times and bad.

Celebrate your successes, give yourself credit, and recognize your efforts.

So, what does it mean to be an all-weather friend to yourself?

It means being supportive, compassionate, and understanding, regardless of the circumstances.

Here are some practical ways to be an all-weather friend:

  • Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Whether it’s taking a relaxing bath, going for a walk, indulging in a hobby, schedule your healing sessions, make time for activities that bring you joy every day.
  • Don’t walk around feeling cold e.g. Warm up in a bath even if it’s the middle of the day, or make yourself hot nourishing soup, or a hot drink.
  • Have a little powernap if you feel exhausted.
  • Take time to cook beautiful meals for yourself and eat slowly, savouring the moment.

If you allow yourself to suffer unnecessary, the trillions of cells in the body that make up the current YOU, are not going to trust that you have your own best interest at heart.

Next, when the rubber hits the road and you want your inner self to show up for you, e.g. you want to feel good on your holiday, look great at a wedding, or manifest a new car, your body is going to let you down.

Why?

Because you haven’t been giving your body ANY love, care, support or attention when it was crying out for it.

And, now you are on your holiday, and you ‘suddenly’ get the flu.

Or you break out in acne on your friend’s wedding day.

And you miss out on the car you have had your eye on because there was a spanner in the works at the last moment.

As I discussed earlier, replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations.

Be your own cheerleader.

Some people suggest changing a negative thought with 3 positive ones!

Acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small.

Give yourself permission to celebrate your successes.

Treat yourself to something special or simply take a moment to feel proud of yourself.

Be kind to yourself at all times.

Allow yourself to feel your emotions without judgment and remind yourself that YOU ARE ENOUGH.

Set Boundaries: Protect your energy by setting boundaries.

Learn to say no when necessary and prioritize your well-being.

Once you begin to show up as your own best friends this will become easier.

Boundaries are then no longer an issue.

When you treat yourself with the same love and respect you would offer your best friend, you’ll find that your confidence grows, and you start to glow with an inner radiance that’s irresistible.

You will feel less triggered, anxious, stressed and frustrated.

It will be easy for you to respond to loving attention from others.

You stop avoiding intimacy.

You will be able to accept compliments.

LIFE REWARDS ACTION.

The Universe is the bank of benevolence and for every act of kindness you show yourself, the universe will add to it with compounding interest.
